Voluntary Surrender of Recognition
CIEH is the professional voice for environmental health representing over 9,000 members working in the public, private and non-profit sectors. It ensures the highest standards of professional competence in its members, in the belief that through environmental health action people's health can be improved. CIEH sets professional standards and provides professional development opportunities through qualifications, training courses and events.
Following a full review of our product offering, and in light of the need to diversify and broaden our market, we have decided voluntarily to surrender recognition as a regulated awarding organisation. This means withdrawing from the regulatory structure imposed by the three regulatory bodies: Ofqual, Qualifications Wales (QiW) and Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA).
Surrender of recognition will have an immediate impact on the delivery of CIEH vocationally-related qualifications, but we will work with you to control the impact on learners as we move towards the final surrender of recognition date of 28 July 2017.
What this means for centres/trainers
All of our current 38 regulated qualifications will be withdrawn with phased Operational End Dates (OEDs) – see table 1a and table 1b for more details. The first OED for 11 qualifications was the 31 January 2017. The second OED, for the remaining 27 qualifications, will be 28 April 2017.
We are also withdrawing our 18 non-regulated, CIEH-accredited qualifications – see table 1a and table 1b for more details. The OED for these qualifications will also be 28 April 2017.
Final dates for certificates to be issued are known as the Certificate End Dates (CEDs) – these are also shown on table 1a and table 1b.
The principal activity taking place between the OEDs and CEDs will be the final processing of results and issuing of certificates. You can continue to deliver training and administer examinations for these qualifications up until the OEDs (for key dates see timelines). It is essential that you plan your training schedules to allow learners sufficient time to complete programmes of learning and assessment.
After the OEDs, centres will not be permitted to:
- enrol learners on training programmes
- administer examinations or assessments.
There will be no extensions to the OEDs and CEDs, and no exceptions.
CIEH will continue to operate as a regulated awarding organisation, complying with the regulators’ general conditions of recognition, until the final date of surrender. Centres and trainers will, therefore, continue to operate under the terms of CIEH agreements, complying with the CIEH Procedure Manual, until current centre and trainer agreements are terminated on 28 July 2017 (see ‘New training products’ below, for information about future arrangements).
What you need to do
Advise your clients/learners that CIEH vocationally-related qualifications are to be withdrawn with regard to the phased OEDs shown in table 1a and table 1b.
Review and, if necessary, revise your training schedules. You will need to make alternative arrangements for any courses that will conclude after the OEDs.
